The Indie Hotel SEO Equity Report: Rome

Which independent Rome hotels actually own their brand-name demand on Google — plus the agencies and booking engines quietly running the show. Real DataForSEO numbers, an acquisitions lens, no fluff.

HotelSEO LabJuly 17, 2026 8 min read

Everyone in hospitality has opinions about “brand.” Almost nobody has numbers. So here are some.

We pulled worldwide Google search volume for the names of Rome’s independent hotels — the searches where someone already wants that place. No chains. No collection cosplay. No multi-property groups in an “independent” costume. Just single-property indies, ranked by how much of the internet asks for them by name.

The methodology, out loud

Rome ranks #9 of the 50 most-searched hotel cities on the planet, by combined worldwide unbranded volume for hotels in rome + rome hotels (DataForSEO, worldwide English). Inside the city we ranked every qualifying independent hotel by search volume for its own name, then fingerprinted each site’s booking engine and web agency.

“Independent” is strict here. One website = one hotel — if the site sells more than one property, it’s out. No chains (Marriott, Hilton, IHG, Hyatt, Wyndham, Accor, Choice, Best Western, Radisson and the rest), no chain-owned soft brands or collections (Autograph, Curio, Tapestry, Tribute, Vignette, MGallery, Luxury Collection), no multi-property groups, and no casino mega-resorts. Full method, exclusions and an honest data-confidence note live in The Brand-Equity 50.

Ranked by worldwide branded search volume for each hotel’s name (DataForSEO, city-qualified). = acquisition signal: strong brand demand, thin unbranded content.

Who’s actually winning

iQ Hotel Roma tops the board at ~22,200 name-searches a month, with Trevi Collection Hotel close behind at ~22,200. These are the names this city runs on.

Nobody’s the house vendor

There’s no dominant agency here — the top hotels are scattered across different shops, each doing its own thing. That fragmentation is its own kind of finding: no one’s quietly consolidating this market’s digital presence. Yet.

Booking engines are even less of a fair fight: Simple Booking (QNT) and SynXis (now Aven) run 6 of the top 10 direct-booking flows between them. So much for “independent.”

The acquisitions lens

If you were hunting an independent to buy or manage in Rome, the interesting targets aren’t the hotels doing everything right — they’re the ones that already own the expensive, unbuyable thing (brand demand) and left the cheap, fixable thing (content and organic capture) untouched. iQ Hotel Roma is the cleanest example: real name demand, a thin site, upside sitting in plain view. Buy the brand, then go take the unbranded traffic it’s leaving on the table.

Next in the series: the same teardown across the rest of the 50 — then we stack them to find the one agency quietly building more of the winners than anyone else.

FAQ

Quick answers

How is 'brand-search equity' measured here?

Worldwide monthly Google search volume for each hotel's own name (city-qualified), via DataForSEO. A proxy for brand demand — how many people go looking for that specific hotel by name each month. Not revenue or occupancy.

Why exclude the big chains and soft brands?

Because the story is independent hotels. We drop Marriott/Hilton/IHG/Hyatt/Wyndham et al., chain-owned collections (Autograph, Curio, Tapestry, Tribute, Vignette), and multi-property groups. If the website represents more than one hotel, it's out.

What's the 'acquisition signal'?

A hotel with strong branded demand but a thin unbranded content footprint — people already want the brand, but the site isn't capturing the traffic around it. For an operator or acquirer, that's upside in plain sight.
